Joplin Youth Center takes boys to see freestyle motocross
Troubled teens get a positive experience in Lake Forest for being well behaved at Trabuco Canyon center. By REBECCA BROWN | CHECK OUT THE PHOTOS HERE
The Electric Death, the Kiss of Death, and the Dead Body were just some of the freestyle motocross tricks that incarcerated teenagers from the Joplin Youth Center in Trabuco Canyon got to see performed on a dirt lot below Saddleback Church in Lake Forest on Tuesday, April 22. The Joplin boys were invited by motocross professionals called "Riders for Christ" who travel the globe performing outlandish stunts on dirt bikes. "I have never seen anything like this in my whole life, not even on TV," said one of the Joplin teens. "It's cool to see them do crazy things that are actually good, and gives back to the community at the same time." The 13 boys, ranging in age from 12 to 16, were brought to the event for good behavior. They are among 64 teenage Joplin Center residents who were convicted of a crime and are serving their sentence at the facility. Rodger Bendinelli, a therapist from Joplin, said many of the kids are gang members. "Activities such as this is a chance for these kids to see the world outside of their neighborhoods. We see this as positive reinforcement that helps teach the kids to make better choices," Bendinelli said. The four motocross riders astonished the crowd each time they took off on their motorcycles from the dirt runway and hit a metal ramp which forced their bikes 75 feet into the air and back down again. Kyle Loza, an X-Game Gold Medalist, showed the boys his newest trick called the Electric Death, a stunt that requires the rider to come off the bike, do a back flip, and sit back down on the bike before landing into a foam pit. Watching Loza flip off his bike in the air and drop to the pit below was a thrill that had the Joplin boys yelling out cat calls and wanting more from the freestyle team as they continued with numerous aerial maneuvers during the two-hour fieldtrip. Dirt bike enthusiast, Dan Williams, volunteers for the free-style motocross team in an effort to help the team reach out to the local community. "These riders have an amazing platform to work from. It allows them to draw in a crowd, amaze them with their talents then share a positive message of living a life of purpose," Williams said. At the close of the exhibition, rider Jimmie McGuire shared with the troubled teens the importance of choosing right over wrong and the hope for a better life. "Jumping allows us to show these kids that Christians are not all dorky and just go to church. We can do things like moto-x, skateboarding, and be cool," McGuire said. The Joplin teens were given t-shirts, autographed posters, and spent time talking one-on-one with the riding team before heading back to the Joplin Ranch.

ENDLESS SUMMERFEST

Hey R4C family! Sunday August 26th, Riders 4 Christ riders Kyle Loza and Dan NAD Norris were joined by Arizona native and friend Robert Distler for an amazing show which took place in San Clemente. Saddleback San Clemente put on its 2nd annual Endless Summerfest this past Sunday which included a Moto X Show, Skate Demo, live music and a classic car show. The morning started off a little shaky. As volunteers gathered to get the event set up they were greeted by bad weather that included rain, thunder and lightening. It looked as though the Summerfest would have to go on without the Moto X Show and Skate Demo because the ramps for both groups were to wet after the rain had stopped. Not only did the Lord provide sunny skies but many people stepped up to mop up the ramps and blow dry the asphalt. We missed our first of two shows, but were still able to deliver in our only show as the even came to a close.
Jimmie and Destin are doing awesome and have been in Sacramento, California riding at the State Fair!!
